Memento Morey!
Special World Cup Edition
Today I’m remembering how much I hated PhyEd class and how much I love Rio Ferdinand.
First off, I’m finding my drawings of celebrities are more fun if I sketch them from memory rather than from a photograph. Here’s my original drawing of Rio Ferdinand based on a recent pic.
Looks more like actor James Nesbitt than Rio Ferdinand––and it doesn’t look like James Nesbitt at all!!!
So I decided to draw Mr. Ferdinand from memory. Here ‘tis.

You can be the judge as to whether I did a better job with this more cartoonish rendering. I think it was his beard in more recent photos that threw me.
I’m fond of Mr. Ferdinand because he was a great player for Manchester United in the era when I watched all of their matches and they won everything. Also, because his position was defender, more specifically center-back. This was the position I played lo these many years ago when my high school introduced us to football/soccer.
Notice how I seem to be doing nothing. That’s because I am doing nothing. I figured out that as a defender I could idle away the torturous PhyEd hour standing by the goal doing nothing (probably thinking about the Marx Brothers) whilst the rest of the team ran all over the other half of the field. My apologies to whomever was the keeper and second defender. It was ultimately their job to keep the ball out of the ol’ onion bag. I may have done some actual defending once the ball neared our goal. I feel I must have had to show some initiative if I wanted to stay in my preferred do nothing spot. I don’t know. I’ve blocked that from my memory.
Well what can you expect when you make a teenager wear a hideous blue PhyEd uniform with an elastic waistband?
Anyway, I’m watching the World Cup and Rio Ferdinand is king.
Thanks for reading!
